Description
We will start our tour by visiting Melidoni Cave, that has an extremely interesting history and amazing archaeological findings some of which are exhibits in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. Then, heading to the pottery village of Margarites we enjoy breathtaking views of the Psilorites Mountains. Picturesque village Margarites is famous for its pottery and craftsmanship, where you can see the samples of local craftsmen and even sit at the potter’s wheel; we will have the opportunity to taste olive oil, homemade wine, mountain honey.
The village has a unique architecture, having at least 5 churches built in the 14th-16th centuries with ancient icons and frescoes. Walking through the narrow streets of village we head towards the Monastery of Christ the Savior and St. Gedeon. Next stop is Eastern Orthodox Monastery of Arkadi, one of the most revered monasteries, it has played a huge role in the history of this island - it is a symbol of Greece's struggle for freedom and independence. After, we will head to the beautiful St. Anthony Gorge for a bit of hiking near the river, exploring the cavernous church of St. Anthony in the rocky walls. Our tour end with a Cretan way of cooking lunch.
